En cliquant sur le lien fourni, on apprend que Steinberg a saisi Github apparemment a propos du SDK de VST, permettant de faire des plugins.
C'est ainsi 282 fichiers identifiés qui grâce auxquels Steinberg a fait fermer 171 projets sur GitHub. Tous open source. Tous sur de l'audio ou du midi. Tous apportant une valeur à l'écosystème Steinberg.
Pourtant les SDK sont gratuits : https://www.steinberg.net/en/company/developers.html . Il suffirait de remplir le "licence agreement" qui au passage n'est pas lisible ou téléchargeable sur la même page. Alors, c'est une régularisation de force pour ceux qui ne l'ont pas signé? Drôle de méthode...
Ce qui est plutôt marrant c'est que Steinberg a aussi un compte sur Github avec des exemple sur le SDK VST: https://github.com/steinbergmedia/vst3sdk . Ça parle aussi de signature de licence, mais sans pour autant donner plus d'explications sur les buts avoués par cette licence.
Je n'ai trouvé aucune référence dans la presse en ligne sur cette fermeture. Mais sur le fond je trouve cela assez lamentable. Déjà que maintenir un projet open source demande une énergie importante, mais si en plus Steinberg s'en mêle en faisant fermer les sites, il y a fort a parier que nombre de ces projets ne ré-ouvriront pas après s'être mis en conformité, car les développeurs auront jeté l'éponge.
Le récent rachat de Github par Microsoft (12 Juillet 2018) ne va pas me rassurer quand à l'avenir de cette plateforme.
Une coup dur pour l'open source musical.
